AI Prompt That Finds the Question a Holding's Price Record Raises
This prompt hands the model one holding's price record and asks it to find the question worth asking about it, then answer it. Typical questions: does the recent rise fit the five-year trend, does the holding swing more than its market, is a fund's return coming from a few large companies. The evidence comes before the answer.
What you need
The snapshot template is optional and adds little here, because the question is about the holding's behavior. These lines cover it:
- Holding: [name and ticker]
- Why I hold it: [e.g. "long-term growth", "income", "hedge against a weak koruna", "not sure"]
- Price now, 30 days, 12 months and 5 years ago: [four prices]
- Largest fall in the last 12 months: [e.g. "18% from June to August", or "not sure"]
The "why I hold it" line shapes the question. A holding kept for income raises questions about payouts and stability; one kept as a hedge raises questions about how it moved when the thing it hedges moved. Without a stated role, the model tends to ask about recent momentum.
Four price points let the model compare short and long horizons, which is where most good questions start: a coin up 40% in a month but flat over a year, or a fund up 9% a year for five years but down this year. The largest fall adds the path between those points. Most broker apps show it on the price chart, and a rough reading is enough.
For a fund, add its largest holdings and their weights if you want the model to consider whether the return is broad or narrow.

1. Look for questions about recent momentum compared with the multi-year record,
how much the holding swings compared with its market, and, for a fund,
whether returns are broad or driven by a few holdings. Take into account why
I hold it.
2. Ask exactly one question, in one neutral sentence.
3. Give two to four facts from these figures that bear on it, explaining what
each one measures.
4. Answer the question directly, separating what the figures confirm from what
is uncertain.
5. Explain why the answer matters for tracking this holding or for its place in
my portfolio.

The question should be specific to your figures. Say you hold a gold product traded on an exchange as a hedge, priced at €71.00 today, €69.50 a month ago, €58.00 a year ago and €41.00 five years ago, with a largest fall of 9% last spring. A good question: "Has this holding behaved like a hedge, or like a growth asset?"
The evidence: up 2.2% in a month, 22.4% in 12 months and 73.2% in five years, which compounds to about 11.6% a year, with a worst fall of 9% in the last year. The answer should separate what is confirmed from what is not. The figures confirm strong growth. Whether the holding kept its value while shares fell cannot be answered without share prices for the same months, and a good model says so instead of assuming.
Why it matters: a hedge that has risen 73% may now be a larger part of your portfolio than you intended, and that is worth knowing whatever the answer to the hedge question.
A different record raises a different question. For a coin at $0.87 today, $0.62 a month ago and $0.83 a year ago, the month is up 40% but the year only about 5%, so the question is more likely whether the month was a rebound. A weak answer asks something leading, such as whether it is time to take profits.
What this can't tell you
Price history shows what happened, not why. The model can propose explanations, but without news, company results or market data for the same months they are hypotheses, and a careful answer labels them as such.
Four prices and a largest fall leave out most of the path, so questions about volatility need monthly or weekly prices to answer properly. The model may compare your holding with "the market" without having market data; ask for its source. It knows nothing about tax on gains in your country or about costs your broker charges. Different runs can raise different questions, and none of them is a forecast.
