AI Prompt to Find the One Thing That Matters Most About a Holding Today

This prompt asks for one finding about one holding: the fact that matters most for tracking it today. Typical candidates are a share that has pulled away from its market, a sudden rise in volatility, or a position that has grown large in your portfolio. The model backs its choice with up to three facts and names one thing to check next.

What you need

The snapshot template is optional. The "share of my portfolio" line below does the same job in one number, so you can skip the snapshot here. Add these lines:

  • Holding: [name and ticker]
  • Price change over 30 days and 12 months: [two percentages, or the prices]
  • Benchmark change over the same periods: [index and two percentages, or "suggest one"]
  • Share of my portfolio: [percentage, or "skip"]

The benchmark line is the one that makes the answer useful. A 20% rise in a year means one thing when the market rose 25% and another when it rose 5%. Pick the index the holding is usually measured against: the main index of its home market for a share, the index a fund tracks for an ETF, a gold or broad commodity index for a metal. Bitcoin is a common yardstick for other coins.

If you are not sure which benchmark fits, write "suggest one". The model should then propose a benchmark and explain the choice before it uses it, and you can check its figures against a free source.

The portfolio share matters because the same finding weighs differently at 2% and at 30% of your money. Round it to the nearest whole percent.

Financial Snapshot Template (Optional)
Here is my financial snapshot. Use only these numbers.

Currency: [e.g. EUR]
Date: [today's date]
Age: [optional]

ASSETS
[name] — [category: cash / stocks / ETFs / crypto / property / metals / other] — [value]
[name] — [category] — [value]
...

LIABILITIES
[name] — [type: mortgage / car loan / credit card / student loan / other] — [outstanding balance] — [interest rate if known]
...

CONTEXT (optional but improves the answer)
Monthly income after tax: [amount]
Monthly spending: [amount]
Amount I add to savings or investments each month: [amount]
Value of the same assets 12 months ago: [amount]

Fill this in once and keep it somewhere you can reach. Every prompt below starts from it. You will want to rebuild it whenever you need a fresh answer, since the figures are only as current as the day you typed them.

Additional inputs for this prompt

Add these lines to your message, below the snapshot if you use one:

  • holding: [your value]
  • price change over 30 days and 12 months: [your value]
  • benchmark change over the same periods: [your value]
  • share of my portfolio: [your value]

You are a market analyst. Find the single most important thing to understand
about this holding today.

Holding: [name and ticker]
Price change over 30 days and 12 months: [figures]
Benchmark change over the same periods: [index and figures, or "suggest one"]
Share of my portfolio: [percentage, or "skip"]

1. Consider several possible findings: momentum, a change in volatility,
divergence from the benchmark, a valuation driver, or the holding's weight in
my portfolio. Keep the one most relevant for tracking it, and show me only
   that one.
2. Give one to three facts that support it, with the arithmetic.
3. State the finding in one or two plain sentences.
4. Explain its practical effect on the holding's performance, its risk, or its
   role in my portfolio.
5. Suggest one factor or indicator to check next. Not a trade.

Prefer a finding the numbers support over a dramatic one. If a number is
missing, ask me for it rather than estimating. No buy or sell recommendations,
price predictions or product picks. This is educational, not advice.

What good output looks like

The answer should come in four short parts, evidence first. Say a European industrial share, priced in euros, rose 31% over 12 months while its home market index rose 12%, and in the last 30 days it fell 4% while the index rose 1%. It makes up 18% of a portfolio worth CZK 2,000,000.

A good finding combines two facts: the share has beaten its market by 19 percentage points in a year (the difference between the two percentages, 31 minus 12), and that run has made it 18% of your money. The recent dip against a rising index is the third supporting fact, and a careful model says what it does and does not show over only 30 days.

The practical effect should be put in your currency: the holding is worth CZK 360,000, so a 10% fall in this one share would take CZK 36,000, or 1.8%, off the whole portfolio. That is a statement about weight, and it holds whether or not the share falls.

The next step should be a check, for example whether the 12-month rise came with higher profits or only a higher valuation, measured by the price-to-earnings ratio (the share price divided by profit per share). A model that offers three insights or ends with "consider trimming" ignored the brief.

What this can't tell you

The finding is only as good as the benchmark. Compare a global fund with a US index, or a small company with a large-company index, and the apparent divergence may be a mismatch in what you compared.

Percentage changes over 30 days and 12 months hide what happened in between. The model's statements about why a share moved are often unsupported, and its knowledge of company results may be months old unless it browses. A second run may choose a different finding. It cannot judge whether the holding's weight suits your situation, and it cannot tell you what selling would cost in tax where you live.
