AI Prompt to Review One Holding's Return Over One and Five Years

This prompt reviews one holding over the long run: its return over 12 months and 5 years, the yearly average, how far it sits below its previous high and how it compares with what you paid. Use it for a share, fund, coin, currency or metal you plan to keep for years, when a weekly or monthly view says too little.

What you need

The snapshot template is optional. Add it if you want a comment on the holding's weight in your total; leave it out for a review of the holding alone. Either way, add these lines:

  • Holding: [name and ticker]
  • Price now, 12 months ago and 5 years ago: [three prices, same currency]
  • My purchase price and date: [e.g. "€84.00, April 2025", or each purchase]
  • Highest price in the last 5 years: [price and month]

Five-year prices are on most broker and exchange websites, usually under the chart's five-year setting. If the holding is younger than five years, give the first price you can find and its date.

If you bought in several lots, list each with its date, or give your average purchase price and say it is an average. The model needs this to separate the holding's own record from your timing: a fund can be up 40% in five years while you are up 5% because you bought most of it last year.

For a fund that pays dividends, say whether the prices include reinvested dividends (an accumulating fund) or not (a distributing fund). Over five years the payouts can add noticeably to the return, and price alone will miss them.

Financial Snapshot Template (Optional)
Here is my financial snapshot. Use only these numbers.

Additional inputs for this prompt

Add these lines to your message, below the snapshot if you use one:

You are an investment analyst reviewing the long-term record of one holding.

Holding: [name and ticker]
Price now, 12 months ago and 5 years ago: [prices]
My purchase price and date: [price and date, or each purchase]
Highest price in the last 5 years: [price and month]

1. Calculate the return over 12 months and over 5 years, in money and as a
percentage, and the average yearly return over 5 years, compounded. Show the
   arithmetic.
2. Compare the holding's record with my own result since I bought it.
3. Describe how bumpy the path was, using the fall from the 5-year high to now.
For a fund, say whether the record looks like broad market growth or one
   sector.
4. List what is improving, then up to three milestones ahead, such as regaining
the previous high or a round price, with the gap to each in money and as a
   percentage.
5. Name one thing working in the holding's favor and one measurable factor to
   keep watching.

If a number is missing, ask me for it rather than estimating. No buy or sell
recommendations, price predictions or product picks. This is educational, not
advice.

What good output looks like

Expect a table first. Say a fund trades at €88.40 today, €79.10 a year ago and €62.00 five years ago, its five-year high was €94.00, and you bought at €84.00 in April 2025. The model should show +€9.30 (11.8%) over a year and +€26.40 (42.6%) over five years, which compounds to about 7.4% a year. Dividing 42.6% by five gives 8.5%, which overstates the yearly figure; a good answer uses the compounded rate and says why.

Your own result comes next: +€4.40 per unit, or 5.2%, since April 2025. The model should point out that most of the five-year gain happened before you bought, which is about your timing, not the fund's record.

For the path, today's price is 6.0% below the €94.00 high, and regaining it needs a rise of 6.3%. A good answer explains the difference: a fall and the recovery from it are measured from different starting points, so the recovery always needs the larger percentage.

The milestones should come with both gaps, and the factor to watch should be a number, such as the €94.00 high. If you count in koruna, ask for the table in CZK too: at an exchange rate of 25.00 CZK per euro, today's price is CZK 2,210, and the five-year result in koruna depends on the rate five years ago.

What this can't tell you

Three prices and a high describe the path only roughly. Two holdings with the same five-year return can have taken very different routes, and this prompt will not show the difference unless you paste more prices.

Returns worked out from prices leave out dividends paid out, your broker's fees and tax on gains in your country, which the model cannot advise on. A strong five-year record says nothing reliable about the next five. The model may mix up simple and compounded averages; check the yearly figure with the formula (end price ÷ start price) to the power of 1/5, minus 1.

Doing this without the retyping

In Sumio, "Asset Long-Term Goal Progress" is one of the 62 built-in prompts. It runs on one stock, fund, coin, currency pair or precious metal you already track, using market data that updates automatically, so there are no old prices to look up and paste for each review. Sumio also shows gains and losses for what you hold. Records are stored on your device, and running the prompt sends the figures it needs to an AI provider. Premium includes the AI assistant.
