AI Prompt to Measure Long-Term Progress in Your Net Worth, Assets or Debts

This prompt compares where your net worth, total assets, total debt or one category stands today with where it stood one and five years ago. It splits the change into money you put in and movement in prices, then names the milestones within reach. Use it a few times a year, when a weekly view is too short to show a trend.

What you need

Paste the snapshot template on this page with today's figures. Then add four lines below it, so the model has starting points to measure from:

  • Part I'm tracking: [net worth, total assets, total debt, or one category such as "Real estate"]
  • Value 12 months ago: [amount]
  • Value 5 years ago: [amount, or the earliest figure you have and its date]
  • Money added or debt repaid since then: [total amount, or "not sure"]

Old figures usually come from an annual bank or broker statement, a tax return, or a spreadsheet you kept at the time. A round number is fine if you say it is rough. If you only have one past figure, give that one and leave the other line empty; the model should then work with a single period instead of inventing the second.

The last line matters most. Without it, the model cannot tell whether a rise came from your saving or from markets, and it may give you credit for a good stock market year. For debts, "repaid" means principal paid off, including regular installments.

Use one currency for every figure. If your base currency changed during the period, convert the old values at the exchange rate of that time and say so.

Financial Snapshot Template
Here is my financial snapshot. Use only these numbers.

Currency: [e.g. EUR]
Date: [today's date]
Age: [optional]

ASSETS
[name] — [category: cash / stocks / ETFs / crypto / property / metals / other] — [value]
[name] — [category] — [value]
...

LIABILITIES
[name] — [type: mortgage / car loan / credit card / student loan / other] — [outstanding balance] — [interest rate if known]
...

CONTEXT (optional but improves the answer)
Monthly income after tax: [amount]
Monthly spending: [amount]
Amount I add to savings or investments each month: [amount]
Value of the same assets 12 months ago: [amount]

Fill this in once and keep it somewhere you can reach. Every prompt below starts from it. You will want to rebuild it whenever you need a fresh answer, since the figures are only as current as the day you typed them.

Additional inputs for this prompt

Add these lines to your message, below the snapshot if you use one:

  • part I'm tracking: [your value]
  • value 12 months ago: [your value]
  • value 5 years ago: [your value]
  • money added or debt repaid since then: [your value]

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
You are a personal finance analyst reviewing long-term progress. Using only my
snapshot above and the figures below:

Part I'm tracking: [net worth / total assets / total debt / one category]
Value 12 months ago: [amount]
Value 5 years ago: [amount and date]
Money added or debt repaid since then: [amount, or "not sure"]

1. Show the change over 12 months and over 5 years, in money and as a
percentage, and the average yearly rate over 5 years, compounded. Show the
   arithmetic.
2. Split each change into what came from my contributions or repayments and
what came from prices or valuations. If I wrote "not sure", say that the
split cannot be made and why.
3. List up to three milestones that are getting closer, such as the next round
figure, a lower debt-to-asset ratio or a larger cash reserve. For each, give
the gap that remains and why reaching it matters.
4. Name one thing I am doing well, based on the numbers.
5. Name one measurable figure to keep watching over the coming months, and what
change in it would be meaningful.

Observations before conclusions. If a number is missing, ask me for it rather
than estimating. No buy or sell recommendations and no product picks. This is
educational, not advice.

What good output looks like

A good answer starts with a small table: today's value, the value 12 months ago, the value 5 years ago, and the change for each period. Say your net worth is €212,000 today, €184,000 a year ago and €121,000 five years ago. The table should show +€28,000 (15.2%) over one year and +€91,000 (75.2%) over five, which is about 11.9% a year when compounded.

Next comes the split. If you added €54,000 over the five years, the model should say that €54,000 of the €91,000 came from you and €37,000 from markets and valuations. This is the most useful line in the answer, because only the first part was under your control.

The milestones should come with numbers. The next round figure, €250,000, is €38,000 away, roughly 16 months at last year's pace. On total debt, the milestones look different: a mortgage of CZK 2,400,000 against assets of CZK 6,000,000 is a 40% debt-to-asset ratio, and bringing it to one third needs the balance down to CZK 2,000,000, a gap of CZK 400,000 at today's asset values.

The last two items should each point at evidence, such as contributions in every one of the five years, and at one figure with a threshold that would be worth noticing.

What this can't tell you

Five-year figures mix your decisions with five years of market history, and the split between them is only as good as your contributions line. Guess that line and the split is a guess too. Property and pension values are often estimates at both ends, which can make progress look smoother or lumpier than it was.

The model ignores inflation unless you mention it, so a 75% rise in euros buys less than 75% more. It knows nothing about tax on gains in your country. It cannot tell whether the milestones it picks suit your plans; that judgement is yours. Check the yearly average yourself, because models often divide the total change by five instead of compounding it. Nothing here predicts the next five years.

Doing this without the retyping

In Sumio, this is one of the 62 built-in prompts, named "Long-Term Goal Progress". It runs on your net worth, your assets, your debts or one category, using the holdings you already track there, so you do not copy old and new figures into a chat. You enter holdings yourself; prices and exchange rates update automatically. Your records are stored on your device, and running the analysis sends the figures it needs to an AI provider. The AI assistant is part of Premium.
