AI Prompt to Compare a Precious Metal You Hold With the Rest of the Metals Market

This prompt sets one precious metal you hold against the rest of its market: gold, silver, platinum and palladium. It compares price moves, volatility and trend, explains why the four metals often go separate ways, and sums up the observations and risks for yours. Use it when you hold one metal and want to know whether its past year was typical for the group.

What you need

You need the metal, the unit its price is quoted in, and three prices with dates. The snapshot template on this page is optional. The comparison is between metals, so your other holdings are not needed and you can leave the snapshot out.

Fill in these lines inside the prompt:

  • Metal: [e.g. silver, priced per troy ounce]
  • Price today, 30 days ago and 12 months ago: [three prices, currency, dates]
  • Other metals' figures, if known: [the same three prices for gold, silver, platinum and palladium]

The third line is what turns this into a comparison. A chat model with no browsing tool cannot look up how the other metals moved, and from memory it tends to mix up periods. Take all figures from one source on the same day, in the same currency and unit. A gram price next to an ounce price, or a dealer's selling price next to a spot price, produces a table that looks precise and means nothing.

Spot price is the market price of the raw metal for immediate delivery. Coins and bars sell above it, so use spot prices for this exercise even if you hold coins.

If you only have your own metal's prices, the prompt still works. The model will then compare your metal with what it knows of the others from training data, and it should say so.

Financial Snapshot Template (Optional)
Here is my financial snapshot. Use only these numbers.

Currency: [e.g. EUR]
Date: [today's date]
Age: [optional]

ASSETS
[name] — [category: cash / stocks / ETFs / crypto / property / metals / other] — [value]
[name] — [category] — [value]
...

LIABILITIES
[name] — [type: mortgage / car loan / credit card / student loan / other] — [outstanding balance] — [interest rate if known]
...

CONTEXT (optional but improves the answer)
Monthly income after tax: [amount]
Monthly spending: [amount]
Amount I add to savings or investments each month: [amount]
Value of the same assets 12 months ago: [amount]

Fill this in once and keep it somewhere you can reach. Every prompt below starts from it. You will want to rebuild it whenever you need a fresh answer, since the figures are only as current as the day you typed them.

Additional inputs for this prompt

Add these lines to your message, below the snapshot if you use one:

  • metal and unit: [your value]
  • price today, 30 days and 12 months ago: [your value]
  • other metals' figures, if known: [your value]

The prompt

Copy this exact text and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini directly beneath your snapshot block.

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
You are a precious metals analyst. Compare my metal with the broader precious
metals market, using only the figures below for prices.

Metal: [name and unit]
Price today, 30 days ago and 12 months ago: [three prices, currency, dates]
Other metals' figures, if known: [same three prices for gold, silver,
platinum and palladium]

1. Calculate the 30-day and 12-month change for my metal and for each other
metal I gave you, in a table. Show the arithmetic.
2. Compare my metal's moves, volatility and trend with the group, and say
   where it stands out.
3. Explain why the metals often move apart: monetary demand, industrial use,
concentration of supply and how each market is traded.
4. Describe typical situations in which my metal has behaved differently from
the rest, using known historical episodes.
5. Sum up the key observations and the specific risks for my metal.

If you cannot see current data, say so. If a figure is missing, ask for it
rather than estimating. No price forecasts, no advice to buy, sell or switch
metals, and no dealers or products suggested.

What good output looks like

A good answer opens with a table: each metal, its two changes in percent, and the prices behind them. You should be able to recompute any cell from what you pasted.

The comparison then places your metal within the group. Ratios help, because they don't depend on currency. Say gold is quoted at an invented 3,000 USD per troy ounce and silver at 37.50 USD. The gold/silver ratio is 80: one ounce of gold buys 80 ounces of silver. Convert both at 1.15 USD per EUR and you get about 2,609 EUR and 32.61 EUR, and the ratio is still 80. If it stood at 90 a year earlier, silver did better than gold over that year, whatever the dollar did.

The section on why metals part ways should be specific. Gold demand comes mainly from jewellery, investors and central banks, with a small industrial share. Silver, platinum and palladium depend far more on industry. Platinum and palladium rely heavily on catalytic converters in cars, and most of their mine supply comes from a few countries.

Historical episodes come with dates, such as the silver spike of 1980 or palladium's run to record highs in the early 2020s. The summary keeps observations and risks apart and tells you nothing about what to do.

What this can't tell you

A chat model without browsing has no live quotes for any of the four metals. Without your figures it compares periods it half remembers, which is worse than no comparison at all.

The comparison uses spot prices. What you would receive for coins or bars depends on the dealer's buying price, which sits below spot, and on the product. Storage, insurance, and VAT or other taxes on physical metal differ by country and sometimes by metal, and the answer does not cover them for yours.

Past differences between metals explain the present; they don't repeat on a schedule. Recheck the percentages in the table, since one swapped price changes the conclusion.

Doing this without the retyping

In Sumio, this comparison is "Market Insights" on a precious metal holding, one of the 62 prompts in the AI assistant, which is part of Premium. It runs with one tap on metal you already track, with its price updated automatically, so you skip collecting quotes in one unit and one currency. Your records are stored on your device; running the prompt sends the figures it needs to an AI provider.
