AI Prompt to Understand What Moves the Price of a Precious Metal You Hold
This prompt explains the forces behind the price of one precious metal you hold: interest rates, the US dollar, industrial demand, mine supply, geopolitical shocks and investor mood. It sets the past year's move against earlier periods and lists the goals and mistakes common among metal holders. It describes what has moved prices before and makes no forecast of what comes next.
What you need
You need the metal, two prices a year apart and the currency you count your money in. The snapshot template on this page is optional. The prompt is about market forces, so you can leave the snapshot out.
Fill in these lines inside the prompt:
- Metal: [e.g. platinum]
- Price 12 months ago and today: [two prices, currency, unit, dates]
- My home currency: [e.g. EUR or CZK]
The home currency line is easy to skip, and it changes the answer. The main metal markets price in US dollars, so a holder in Prague or Madrid gets two moves at once: the metal's move in dollars and the dollar's move against the koruna or the euro. A good answer separates the two, and it can only do that if it knows which currency you count in. If you have the exchange rates for both dates, add them to the price line.
The price lines anchor the discussion in a real period. A chat model without browsing does not know what happened in markets after its training data ends. Tell it the year's move, and if you know of an event that hit the metal recently, such as a mine closure or a change in central bank buying, add a sentence about it at the end of the prompt.
Take both prices from the same source and in the same unit. Spot prices, the market price of the raw metal, are the usual reference.

You are a precious metals analyst and educator. Explain the market trends around
my metal, using the figures below as the anchor.
Metal: [name]
Price 12 months ago and today: [two prices, currency, unit, dates]
My home currency: [currency]
1. Calculate the 12-month change in the quoted currency and, if it differs, in
my home currency. If you need an exchange rate I did not give, ask for it.
2. Explain the main forces that move this metal's price: interest rates and
inflation, the US dollar, industrial demand, mine supply and recycling,
geopolitical events and investor sentiment.
3. Say which of these forces have typically mattered most for this metal, and
compare the past year with earlier periods using known historical episodes.
4. Describe the goals people usually have when holding this metal and the
common pitfalls, such as buying after a spike or ignoring dealer spreads.
Describe what has happened and make no prediction of where the price goes next.
No buy or sell recommendations, and no dealers, funds or products suggested. What good output looks like
A good answer starts with the arithmetic, split by currency. Say gold went from an invented 2,500 to 2,800 USD per troy ounce, a rise of 12%, while EUR/USD moved from 1.10 to 1.20. In euros the price went from about 2,273 to about 2,333 EUR, a rise of roughly 2.7%. Most of the dollar gain disappeared for a euro holder because the dollar weakened over the same year. The answer shows both calculations so you can redo them.
The section on forces ranks them for your metal. For gold, real interest rates (rates after inflation) and the dollar usually come first, because gold pays no interest and is priced in dollars. For silver, platinum and palladium, industrial demand carries more weight, and for platinum and palladium so does mine supply concentrated in a few countries.
Historical comparisons should be dated and specific, for example gold's two decades of decline after its 1980 peak, or its rise in the years after the 2008 financial crisis.
The pitfalls section names habits that cost money: buying after a sharp run, paying a high premium for small coins, forgetting storage and insurance, and expecting income from an asset that pays none.
What this can't tell you
Explanations of trends are written after the fact. The model can say which forces have mattered for your metal before. It cannot say which one will matter next, and the same kind of news has pushed prices both ways in different years.
A chat model without browsing has no live prices and knows nothing of events after its training cutoff, so a recent rate decision, mine strike or sanction will be missing unless you mention it.
The answer covers one metal in general terms. It does not know why you hold it, what share of your wealth it is, or how gains on metal are taxed in your country. Redo the currency split in the first step yourself.
