AI Prompt to Summarize the Market Data of a Precious Metal You Hold
This prompt turns the price data for one precious metal into a plain summary: what your holding is worth in your currency, how the price moved over 30 days and 12 months, where it sits in its yearly range and how much it has swung. It suits anyone holding gold, silver, platinum or palladium who wants the figures read correctly, units included.
What you need
You need a few price figures for one metal and the amount of it you hold. The snapshot template on this page is optional. The summary is about one metal, and the rest of your balance sheet doesn't change it.
Fill in these lines inside the prompt:
- Metal and unit: [e.g. gold, quoted per troy ounce]
- Price today: [price, currency, date]
- Price 30 days ago and 12 months ago: [two prices]
- 12-month high and low: [two prices]
- Amount I hold: [e.g. 100 g, or 5 one-ounce coins]
Units cause most of the mistakes. Metal prices are usually quoted per troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams; the ordinary ounce used for food is 28.35 grams. Many dealers and apps quote per gram or per kilogram instead. Write the unit next to every price and next to the amount you hold.
Use the spot price, the market price of the raw metal for immediate delivery, from one source on one date. A chat model with no browsing tool has no current quote, so the price lines must come from you.
If the quote is in USD and you count your money in EUR or CZK, add the exchange rate to the price line, for example "3,000 USD per troy ounce, 1 EUR = 1.15 USD". For the 12-month change in your own currency, add the rate from twelve months ago as well.

The prompt
Copy this exact text and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini directly beneath your snapshot block.
You are a precious metals analyst. Summarize the market data for my metal in
plain language, using only the figures below for prices.
Metal and unit: [metal, quoted per troy ounce, gram or kilogram]
Price today: [price, currency, date]
Price 30 days ago and 12 months ago: [two prices]
12-month high and low: [two prices]
Amount I hold: [quantity and unit]
1. Convert my holding into the price's unit and calculate its value today.
Show every conversion.
2. Calculate the change over 30 days and 12 months, in money and in percent,
for the price and for my holding.
3. Show where today's price sits in the 12-month range.
4. Explain what these figures say about volatility and trend, and what they
are too few to show.
5. Compare the figures with how this metal typically behaves in calm markets,
in crises and when interest rates or the dollar move sharply.
6. If the data is not enough for a meaningful summary, say so and list what
to look up next.
Ask for any missing figure rather than estimating it. No price forecasts, no
advice to buy, sell or hold, and no dealers or products suggested. What good output looks like
A good summary starts with your holding, because that is where unit errors show up. Say you hold 100 g of gold, the quote is an invented 3,000 USD per troy ounce, and 1 EUR buys 1.15 USD. 100 g is 3.215 troy ounces (100 ÷ 31.1035), worth about 9,645 USD, or about 8,387 EUR. If the quote twelve months ago was 2,500 USD, the price rose 20% in dollars. The answer should then point out that your gain in euros also depends on how the exchange rate moved, and work it out if you gave both rates.
Next comes the range: how far today's price is from the 12-month high and from the low, as percentages.
On volatility, a good answer explains what the word means for a metal and admits the limits of five data points. It can describe the size of the swings you pasted, but it cannot produce a standard volatility figure from them.
The comparison with typical behaviour stays general and labelled. Gold has often held its value during stock market sell-offs, and silver usually swings more than gold in both directions. When the data runs out, the answer lists what to check next, such as a longer price history from the same source.
What this can't tell you
A chat model without browsing has no current metal prices, so the value of your holding is only as recent as the quote you typed. If it reaches for a price from memory, discard that part of the answer.
Spot price is a reference point for what your metal is worth. Dealers buy coins and bars below spot and sell above it, and the gap differs by product and by size. The model cannot value collectible coins either, where rarity counts for more than metal content.
Tax on selling metal, and VAT on buying it, depends on your country. Recheck the unit conversions: a gram mistaken for an ounce changes the result about 31 times over.
