Value, Growth, Income or Index Investing: Which Strategy Fits Your Situation

This prompt compares four investment strategies (value, growth, income and index investing) on risk, cost and the time each one asks of you. It suits investors who keep hearing these labels and want to know which one their own money already follows. You get a side-by-side table, situations where each strategy fits or disappoints, and your current holdings sorted by strategy.

What you need

Paste the snapshot template from this page. Give each investment a recognisable name or a short description, such as "global index fund", "dividend fund" or "shares in three tech companies", so the model can tell which strategy each holding follows. Cash, property and debts stay in as usual, because they show how much risk the rest of your money can carry.

Below the snapshot, add three lines:

  • Time horizon: [when you expect to start using this money, e.g. from 2041]
  • Hours a month for investing: [e.g. 1 hour, or 10 hours of reading company reports]
  • Income needed from investments: [e.g. none for now, or €400 a month from 2030]

The hours line matters because the strategies differ most in the work they ask of you. Picking individual value or growth shares means reading annual reports and following each company. An index fund needs far less attention once it is set up.

Put all values in one currency, and list each fund or share separately so the model can sort them one by one.

Prompt for ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini
You are a financial educator explaining the main investment strategies to a
private investor. Using only my snapshot above and the three lines below:

Time horizon: [when I will start using this money]
Hours a month for investing: [number]
Income needed from investments: [none, or amount and from when]

1. Explain four strategies in plain language: value investing, growth investing,
income investing and passive or index investing. Say what each one looks for
and how it expects to make money.
2. Compare them in a table: typical ups and downs, costs, time needed, tax
points to check where I live, and how long each can take to work.
3. Describe a situation where each strategy tends to fit and one where it tends
to disappoint, using time horizon, risk tolerance and goals.
4. Sort my current investments by the strategy they follow, as far as the names
allow, give each strategy its share, and say which one my money leans towards.
5. Explain which strategies are consistent with my three lines and why, and
what combining two of them would involve.

Treat this as education about methods. Ask for missing details instead of
guessing. No buy or sell recommendations, no specific securities or funds.

What good output looks like

A good answer starts with four short descriptions. Value investing buys companies that look cheap against their earnings or assets and waits for the price to catch up. Growth investing pays more for companies expected to grow fast. Income investing looks for regular dividends or interest. Index investing buys a whole market through a low-cost fund and does not try to pick winners.

The table should use the same columns for all four. Time needed should show the widest gap: hours of company research a month for value and growth stock picking, very little for an index fund.

The sorting step needs numbers that add up. Say your investments are a global index fund worth €21,000, a dividend fund worth €6,000 and shares in two fast-growing tech companies worth $9,900 (€9,000 at an example rate of $1.10 per euro), €36,000 in total. The model should show about 58% index, 17% income and 25% growth, and say your money leans towards index investing.

The fit section should use your three lines. With a 15-year horizon, two hours a month and no income needed yet, the model might point out that regular payouts are not something you need now, and that two hours a month is little time for picking individual shares. If it quotes past returns for any strategy, it should name the index, the period and the source.

What this can't tell you

The model sorts holdings by name, and many funds mix styles. A fund called "quality" or "dividend growth" can sit between value, growth and income, so treat the sorting as rough.

Claims that value or growth does better depend on the market and the period chosen, and a model may quote figures from memory without a source. Ask for the index, the years and where the data comes from, then check them. It has no live prices unless you paste them. It does not know how dividends and capital gains are taxed where you live, which can change how income and growth investing compare after tax. Check the percentages in the sorting step.

Doing this without the retyping

This prompt is built into Sumio as "Investment Strategy Introduction", one of the app's 62 prompts. It runs against the holdings you already track there, across the whole balance sheet, with prices and exchange rates kept up to date, so the sorting by strategy starts from current values. Your records are stored on your device. When you run the analysis, the figures it needs are sent to an AI provider to produce the answer. The AI assistant is part of Sumio Premium.
